About the Artist

Tamra Sanchez

I was born in Palo Alto California and have lived in Santa Rosa, California since the early 1980s.

Always having an interest in the arts, I began my personal journey as a young adult taking watercolor classes from a local artist.  After several years of creating, selling, and then teaching in watercolors, I explored the medium of pastels and was instantly drawn to their lushness and sensuous tactile quality.

I’ve developed my pastel skills over the years through reading, workshops, and extensive hands on experience.  Artists I have studied under include Richard McDaniel, Clark Mitchell, Kim Lourdier, Gil Dellinger, and Alan Flattmann among others.

Inspired by the beauty in the ordinary, moments in time, objects, people, the scenery around me, I strive to capture that spark, that bright spot of color, shadow, or composition that best conveys the excitement and spirit that initially caught my attention.  My hope is that through my art, the viewer will see with new eyes and a new appreciation of the world around them.

For me, pastels are the perfect medium to speak my artist’s voice.

I am a member of the Pastel Society of the West Coast, the Pastel Society of America and the Pastel Society of Colorado.  My works are permanently on display at “Corrick’s” gallery in downtown Santa Rosa.  Over the years I have been juried into a multitude of local galleries and shows, winning awards ranging from honorable mention to first place to best of medium.  I was a partner at “Local Color Gallery” in Bodega Bay, Ca. displaying my art and co-managing the gallery for 10 years until its closure in October of 2014.  Each fall, for two weekends, I participate in Sonoma County’s “Art Trails”, a juried open studios tour, demonstrating and selling my art out of my studio.

I teach workshops and private lessons in pastel and watercolor
